Meet Jess
As a community nominated candidate endorsed by Voices of Deakin, I have committed to being a representative for people-powered politics. I have no party affiliation and will run a campaign that focuses on policy and the people I would like to represent.
I want to know what you’re challenged by, where you have concerns, what hopes you have for the future, and how we could work together.
I’m an independent, but I am not alone. I have a team of amazing people working alongside me, and we could always use more help. If you’d like to join the conversation and step towards growth, justice and purpose, reach out, we’d love to hear from you!

About Jess
My name is Jessica (Jess) Ness—I am an active community leader, and a passionate advocate for sustainability, inclusion, and resilience.
As a professional, a mother of three, and as dedicated community member, I have raised my family in Deakin and have spent over 15 years working to strengthen communities, drive policy reform, and ensure fair access to housing, education, healthcare, and a thriving natural environment.
I’m running because I believe we can do politics differently if we have leadership that listens, takes action, and puts people first. It’s never been more apparent than now, as we’re reminded of just how fragile democracy is, and I’m ready to fight to protect ours.
I am focused on issues that impact peoples lives, their cost of living – both now and into the future, and the ability to be part of a resilient, supportive and just community.
Background
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Geothermal Energy from Monash University and I am a Member of the Institute of Community Directors. My professional experience spans geothermal research, community development, and strategic engagement with community leaders, government, not-for-profits, and service providers to deliver real, lasting change. As Vice President of the Communities Council on Ethnic Issues, and Chair of the Migrant Settlement Committee, I have worked with diverse communities, policymakers, and local organisations to identify challenges, advocate for solutions, and drive greater social and environmental equity. Previously, as Strategic Engagement Co-ordinator at the Migrant Information Centre, I led multi-stakeholder partnerships, supported grant and policy development, and helped strengthen multicultural organisations. Through this work, I have collaborated with federal, state, and local governments, ensuring that policy decisions are informed, community-driven, and effective. I have a deep grassroots connection to Deakin, having served in volunteer roles at Central Ringwood Community Centre, Eastern Community Legal Centre’s Climate Resilience Advisory Group, and Communities of Wellbeing and many more. My work has included designing and delivering community-led programs such as the Bedford Park Community Garden, securing funding for critical projects, and advocating for inclusive policies—from urban sustainability initiatives and waste reduction strategies, to improving access to education, employment, and social services. This experience has shaped my practical, solutions-focused approach to governance—one that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility and social justice.
Why I'm running
I’m tired of politics that prioritises point-scoring over problem-solving. I’m running because I believe we could do politics differently if we had leadership that listens, takes action, and puts people first. It’s never been more apparent than now, just how fragile democracy, and I’m ready to fight to protect ours. The choices we make today will define our future—our economy, environment, and quality of life depend on it. With practical policies, community-driven solutions, and a commitment to transparency, we can create a stronger, fairer, and more sustainable Australia. I’m here to work for you. Let’s get it done—together.
